Here are the answers to some of your ‘frequently asked questions’.

If you still can’t find the answer to your question, please contact us today for further assistance. We will be happy to help.

How much is the deposit?

A deposit is required for all vehicles, We preauthorize £150 onto your credit or debit card.

Can I choose what vehicle I drive?

Yes and no. When you book a vehicle, you book that category. If there is something specifically you require, let us know and we will do our absolute best.

Will my hire rate change?

Our rates aim to provide the best value every day, so they will change from time to time. Once you confirm your reservation, the rate we have quoted you will not change.

What do I need when I rent a car?

All drivers must have a valid driver’s licence and a major credit/debit card (with available balance at least equal to the expected hire charge). The card holder must be present at the time of rental, even if he or she will not be the authorised driver. Driver and card holder must have proof of identity and age. Note that an international driver’s licence on its own is not sufficient; you must also have, and be able to show, a valid licence from your own national licensing authority. We also require a proof of address, this may be a bank statement/utility bill etc.

Summary: Both parts of your UK licence + Proof of address, old style paper licences will require a photographic ID.

With changes in the way DVLA deal with points and convictions, a paper counterpart is no longer required. By logging into https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence, you can generate a code which is valid for 72 hours that you can bring with you. We advise you do that before you come to the rental station so we can validate your licence. Should you not be able to do this, we can contact DVLA on your behalf for a cost of £6.

How old must I be to rent a car?

The authorised driver must be at least 21 and held their licence for more than 2 years with no points/convictions. Standard charges apply to drivers 25 or over, additional charges may be applied if the authorised driver is under 25.

Can I have more than one driver?

Yes – but all additional drivers must meet the same requirements as the authorised driver, and a surcharge may be applied. If any driver is under 25, an additional charge may be applied. Insurance must be valid for every person who expects to drive the vehicle.

What about insurance?

The renter is responsible for any damage or liability occurring during the rental, and should make arrangements for insurance against these risks. Hewitt Hire can offer a range of damage and liability waiver policies which provide this insurance. Your personal, household or travel insurance policies may already cover some or all of this – check with your own insurer.

Can I cancel a rental agreement?

We do not usually charge a cancellation fee prior to the pick-up date. If we have required an advance deposit, we may charge a cancellation fee. Ending a rental before the end of the agreed period may also incur a charge.

Can I keep the vehicle for a longer period than my reservation?

The rental agreement is for a specific period, and we expect you to return the vehicle at the agreed time. Late return of the vehicle without prior warning may attract a surcharge. If unforeseen events mean you need to keep the vehicle for longer than expected, please contact us at the phone number on your rental agreement to discuss your change of plans. Your additional rental period may be at a different rate, but we will not impose any penalties or surcharges for late return should we be made aware in good time.
